Birthday (& Christmas) Bash

You're Invited! While in Arizona, we held our annual birthday party for Connor (2nd) & Uncle Scott (34th) and family Christmas gathering.

I learned my lesson with Connor’s 1st Birthday Party, and kept everything uber-simple this year.  Basically, I made sure that I could make ahead and bring all party decorations with me, rather than spend the week running all over town to finalize details.  This made for a much more relaxing vacation!

The kids are all still small, so I didn’t worry about activities.  Just some tasty appetizers, a yummy lasagna dinner, and birthday cake for dessert… with a family gift exchange afterwards.

Birthday (& Christmas) Bash - Party Details - 12.12.10

No specific theme this year, just a consistent color combo of red and light blue.  I ordered Connor’s super-cute birthday shirt from Piccadilly Circus Designs, and my mom made a matching one for Scott ahead of time.  Before our trip, I made a bunting for the wall (craft foam with scrapbook paper mod-podged on, strung with ribbon), a bunting for the cake (scrapbook paper, string, skewers), and simple favor tags.  (Favors were ordered from here.)  The circle garlands were made with dozens of circles punched from scrapbook paper and sewn together by machine.

Uncle Erik decided that since it was Christmas “morning” he’d better come in his pajamas.

Birthday (& Christmas) Bash - Family Fun - 12.12.10

This family get-together is definitely the highlight of our trip each year!  And, we were able to get a picture of all 12 of us together.  :)

Rogers Family - December 2010

Say cheese!

NOTE:  It’s been nearly 4 months since our last and likely final photo shoot at the fine Target Portrait Studios.  Otherwise, this post would contain much more scathing criticisms!

Ultimately, I wanted to have a cluster of pictures on the wall documenting the growth of my son over his first 2 years.  Based on price and convenience alone, I chose Target Portrait Studios.  We had to stick with them for consistency’s sake.  :S

Yes, yes… I do realize that you get what you pay for… but, seriously?!?  (See his 6-mo. shoot, his 12-mo. shoot, and his 18-mo. shoot.)  Ugh.  It’s a good thing we think he’s one cute kid!

Our first and third turn at Target here in Illinois was decent – nothing too much more or less than I expected.  The second and fourth turns at Target in Mesa & Gilbert, Arizona (just in case you wanted to avoid them) were horrific.  Not really even worth the little amount of money you pay them for prints.  (Because the disappointment from the whole experience will cost you much more than the actual dollars.)  Let’s just say that the white backdrop dirty, white sheet is always disgusting, the photographers are typically about 13 and the only thing they know about picture taking is which button to push, and you’re forced to pick the least terrible of all the shots in about 6.4 minutes while your kid is further melting down from the whole experience.

The loser group of shots:

2 Crappy Target Photos1

One of the whole points in attempting this shoot in Arizona was so that we could capture all of the cousins together for the grandparents.  We walked away with only 1 shot of any of them together.  Even though we told the “photographer” to keep shooting through the meltdowns, hoping to capture at least something.  Pathetic.

Connor & Maddy

At least my sister was able to walk away with some cute shots of my nieces…

The final 3 pictures in this post are the ones we ended up having printed… only because I had to leave with something to give the grandparents.

This is the shot that made it to the gallery wall in the office.  The other shots on the wall are here: 61218.  Yes, it’s a little “which one of these things is not like the others”, but it’s the best we got!

Connor 2

Like I said, it’s a good thing he’s so cute!

I finally got around to finishing my Disclaimer & FAQ page.

Pattern Pieces :: The Series

We’re currently in the process of redecorating and updating Casa de Sprik.  When we moved in 5.5 years ago, we were newlyweds, and we did a pretty good job of incorporating the décor and furnishings we both brought to the marriage.  Fast forward to now, and that old décor doesn’t necessarily feel like “us” anymore… or it’s become a little dated.

I’ve found myself with a large expanse of wall behind my living room sofa.  The ceilings are pretty high, so I knew I wanted to fill it both horizontally and vertically.  Finding a large art piece would easily run us in the hundreds of dollars… I started brainstorming.

My ultimate goal was to come up with something clean, fresh, and a little modern for this wall.  I’ve always loved the idea of Crate & Barrel’s Classical Symmetry Prints – unfortunately, they come at a hefty price tag and colorway that won’t work well for my living room plans.  Then, earlier this month, I spotted the “Five Dolla Art” post on Young House Love… and I figured out an idea.  I could take YHL’s idea of using the colors that work for your room, framed in IKEA Ribba frames, hung in a grid format, and add patterns to the solid colors.

And, guess what…  I’ve turned them into a series of printables just for you!  :)

IMAGE - Pattern Pieces . The Series

So far, I’ve created 13 different patterns in 25 colorways (using the same colors I’ve used in the past on other printables).  Who knows… I might get crazy and  create even more!  Right now, my plan is to release a few patterns a week.

IMAGE - Pattern Pieces - COLORWAY GUIDE

Don’t get overwhelmed… just pick and choose what you like.  If you decide to do a grid in your home, I’d suggest keeping it simple with either colors or patterns or both.  But, don’t think that these will only work hung in multiples – what about framing a pattern in a favorite color to fill in part of your collage wall?  Or using the pattern as a background behind a favorite photo or a monogram?

Currently, each print is sized at 12x12(Costco will create 12x12 prints for only $2.99 each!)  If you don’t want the pattern as a square, upload it to Picnik, and crop it to whatever size works best for you.  You could even resize the prints, to create smaller squares for framing or other projects.

I’m excited to complete my living room art installation, but I’m even more excited to see what all of you do with the patterns.  Please be sure to send them to me!

Stay tuned… the first installment of patterns is coming up!

Just because (33)

imagePrior to becoming a SAHM, I worked in an office full-time.  One of my biggest pet peeves were the co-workers and/or bosses who would come to me needing assistance with something that could have been handled very differently if they had just thought ahead.  (Inevitably it was always at 4:29pm on a Friday afternoon, ensuring that I had to stay later than planned.)

This phrase is not mine, but I did have it displayed on my desk at 2 different companies.  My colleagues were always amused… but I was completely serious about the sentiment.  :)

Perhaps you’ve got a situation, whether it be at work or home, where you’re continuously being put out by others not planning ahead?

For you, another printable in the Just Because series

Arizona Adventures

Arizona Adventures - 12.2010 - 4Here begins my attempt to get caught up on family blogging.  After all, I do plan on making another blog book someday… and at this rate, it’s gonna be pretty empty.  So, if you follow Sprik Space just for the printables, I understand – just bear with me, because the grandparents have been chomping at the bit for more pics!

For the second year in a row, we’ve traveled to Arizona (where my side of the family lives), a couple of weeks before Christmas.  Timing-wise, it’s perfect – the airport is less busy, fares are reasonable, and it encourages all of us to get our Christmas preparations completed ahead of schedule.  While we’re there, we squeeze in lots of activities plus a birthday party/family Christmas extravaganza.  Brian and I even got away and had a much needed date night!

We always have a fabulous time, and this year was no exception!

An added bonus – all three of us came down with colds/sinus infections!  Joy.  Especially on the plane ride home…

Hoping the pictures will speak for themselves because text will be sparse on these.  :S

Just because (32)

Just Because 32 - look at the stars - 8x10 - teal blue - Sprik SpaceWe are unabashed Coldplay fans in the Sprik house.  In fact, our first concert together was theirs, and it’s a fun, fond memory.  We’re also crossing our fingers that they release their new album later this year!

One of my favorite songs of theirs is “Yellow”… and the best phrase from the lyrics just had to be turned into a printable for all of you!  :)

So, here you go – another printable in the Just Because series

BONUS – all colorways are available in both a 5x7 and an 8x10.

"We have every reason to be optimistic in this world. You can't, you don't build out of pessimism or cynicism. You look with optimism, work with faith, and things happen. Things will work out. Keep trying. Be believing. Be happy. Don't get discouraged. Things will work out."

Sunday Sustenance

"Charity is, perhaps, in many ways a misunderstood word. We often equate charity with visiting the sick, taking in casseroles to those in need, or sharing our excess with those who are less fortunate. But really, true charity is much, much more.

Real charity is not something you give away; it is something that you acquire and make a part of yourself. And when the virtue of charity becomes implanted in your heart, you are never the same again. It makes the thought of being a basher repulsive.

Perhaps the greatest charity comes when we are kind to each other, when we don’t judge or categorize someone else, when we simply give each other the benefit of the doubt or remain quiet. Charity is accepting someone’s differences, weaknesses, and shortcomings; having patience with someone who has let us down; or resisting the impulse to become offended when someone doesn’t handle something the way we might have hoped. Charity is refusing to take advantage of another’s weakness and being willing to forgive someone who has hurt us. Charity is expecting the best of each other."

Social media guilty pleasures

What did we all do online before social media?  I hardly remember anymore…

FBDo you follow Sprik Space on Facebook?  Not only is each post listed when it’s published, but I’ve begun to highlight some of your submissions.  So many of you have sent me FUN pics of the printables (& other ideas) in action. It really makes my day and I'm so flattered that you like them enough to incorporate them. (Just leave a comment or shoot me an e-mail.)  Please keep sending them in! :)  You can follow Sprik Space on Facebook here.

pinMy latest source of inspiration would have to be Pinterest.  LOVE it.  It’s my latest place to browse and I find myself gathering ideas much like I did when I was posting Brief Bits regularly.  (Which I vow to do again, someday.)  If you’re a fan of Brief Bits-style posts, then you’ll love this site.  You can follow my Pinterest boards here.

I do have a Twitter account… but I don’t do anything with it.  And probably never will.  Twitter’s just not for me, and that’s okay.

So that’s all for now… I have several family update posts to write.  Grandparents haven’t seen pics of Connor since I don’t know how long.  I’d better get those edited and written up before I get in trouble!

Just because (31)

Just Because 31 - & - navy blue - Sprik SpaceI love the ampersand.  If I were to have a favorite symbol, the ampersand would be it.  The graceful curves, the crossing lines… it joins things together – husband & wife, mother & child.

I wanted to add another ampersand to our collage wall in the bedroom

This is what I came up with… I just have to choose which color to print.  :)

And for you, another printable in the Just Because series

Just because (30)

One of these days, Connor’s going to be ready to move out of his crib.  I do plan to utilize the crib as long as he’ll let me (ie. we’re done once he figures out how to climb out of it!), but in the meantime, I’ve been brainstorming the next phase of his room.  One of Brian’s bachelor-hood hobbies was sailing, so I keep thinking that maybe a nautical theme would be fun.

I saw these adorable sailboats on Martha has Minions, and knew I had to adapt them to a printable.  I think this sailboat turned out pretty cute, and if a nautical theme is the way I go, I plan on creating several more little sailboats to hang on his wall.

In the meantime, here’s another printable for you in the Just Because series… available in both a 5x7 and an 8x10.
