Yup, that's pretty much what I thought, too,

Public Service Announcement

To all pedestrians out there, particularly those in store parking lots:

The shortest distance when walking in front of my car is a straight line... not a diagonal line... not a curvy line. There is no excuse for you as a human being if you choose to walk in the same direction I'm driving... right in front of my car... especially when you saw me there before you started walking. Just because I stopped to allow you to cross in front of me, does not mean I'll be happy if you make me follow you like this for several dozen yards. I will make certain allowances for people with small children or the elderly who are clearly having a hard time walking period. If you look able-bodied to me and you're being stupid, then the sign applies.

Sincerely,
Annoyed beyond belief

I stand corrected!

Naturally, my dad busted me on this one...

Message: Please expose the popcorn cell phone thing as a hoax and refer/link to this article.

Think about it. Popcorn pops because the moisture in the kernel is heated to the point where the water becomes steam. Microwaves can do it, but they are a totally different wavelength that cell phones. And, if this popcorn trick was real, your ear would become very hot and your brain would boil even during a short call!

Remember to be rational and, for such outlandish claims, skeptical.

By Brad Smith
WirelessWeek - July 09, 2008

Some of the most popular videos on the Internet in recent weeks have shown how you can use a cell phone to pop popcorn, YouTube is rife with the images of three or four phones surrounding a few kernels on a coffee table, then someone calls the phones and the radio signal supposedly heats the popcorn so quickly that it pops in a matter of seconds.

The videos were e-mailed around the world, sometimes with messages that said, “This is why you should never use a cell phone.” The implication was that if cell phones could do this to a few kernels of popcorn, what would happen to your brain?

It all turned out to be an entertaining and viral marketing campaign, put together by a small Bluetooth headset company named Cardo Systems. The company, based in Pittsburgh, devised the videos to promote the use of its headsets.

Some of the videos showed they came from Cardo Systems; others did not. A number of videos showed people trying to do it themselves without knowing it was a hoax. Other people had fun with the idea – one video showed someone using popped popcorn to explode an iPhone.

There’s no doubt the videos were a huge success, at least in the number of viewers. More than 15 million people have watched them since Cardo Systems put up the first ones May 28.

Abraham Glezerman, CEO of Cardo Systems, called the videos an “unconventional way” to reach a global audience that normally would have required a very large marketing budget. Besides the video viewers, Glezerman and Cardo have been featured in stories on CNN, ABC and the New York Times.

“We did it as a means of getting buzz,” he said, even if the videos didn’t explicitly promote the Bluetooth headsets or his products. “It created discussions, blogs, letters, a worldwide debate.”

So, is it possible to use a few phones to pop popcorn? “Anyone knows it would take 10 million handsets to accomplish something like that,” said Glezerman. “I was quite surprised that some people took it for real.”

Point made and taken. :)

Pop! Goes Your Brain Cells

Does this scare anyone else?

And then there's been this article posted at CNN.

I think I'm going to need to get my bluetooth working again.

Recent Read

Just finished up this book... LOVED IT! Definitely deeper than most chick lit out there, I hardly think it should be put in the same category. It was a great illustration of how complicated mother-daughter relationships can be, especially through the teen years...

Certain Girls
by Jennifer Weiner

From Publishers Weekly
Following the story collection The Guy Not Taken, Weiner turns in a hilarious sequel to her 2001 bestselling first novel, Good in Bed, revisiting the memorable and feisty Candace Cannie Shapiro. Flashing forward 13 years, the novel follows Cannie as she navigates the adolescent rebellion of her about-to-be bat mitzvahed daughter, Joy, and juggles her writing career; her relationship with her physician husband, Peter Krushelevansky; her ongoing weight struggles; and the occasional impasse with Joy's biological father, Bruce Guberman. Joy, whose premature birth resulted in her wearing hearing aids, has her own amusing take on her mother's overinvolvement in her life as the novel, with some contrivance, alternates perspectives. As her bat mitzvah approaches, Joy tries to make contact with her long absent maternal grandfather and seeks more time with Bruce. In addition, unbeknownst to Joy, Peter has expressed a desire to have a baby with Cannie, which means looking for a surrogate mother. Throughout, Weiner offers her signature snappy observations: (good looks function as a get-out-of-everything-free card) and spot-on insights into human nature, with a few twists thrown in for good measure. She expends some energy getting readers up to speed on Good, but readers already involved with Cannie will enjoy this, despite Joy's equally strong voice.

"You're a nervous, sweaty-looking man... you project failure."

Tiburon would be so proud!

So, awhile back, I answered a question correctly on this post.
(Don't ask how I knew the answer - I must have John Mayer's first album practically memorized.)

Anyway, yesterday I received the sweetest package in the mail from Ashley... SKITTLES!
Now, how did she know I love them so much???

BTW, Finding Joy is a really cute blog... you should totally check it out.

A gift... for me???

If someone wanted to buy me one of these, I wouldn't at all be disappointed!

At around $3 each, you could probably afford to buy me more than one...

Tomorrow I'll post webisode #3. :)

Ch..ch..ch...CHEESECAKE!

Did you know that Wednesday, July 30th is NATIONAL CHEESECAKE DAY?
Now, why isn't that a national holiday??

In celebration of National Cheesecake Day and their 30th anniversary, The Cheesecake Factory will be offering any slice of their delicious goodness for only $1.50 (limit one per person, natch). More details here.

Don't miss out!

Another show you must see

We've definitely come a long way from the workplaces of the 1960s! (Although I recently worked in an environment creepily similar to the office portrayed on the show.) I find that time period absolutely fascinating!

Mad Men... is amazing! The men are smarmy and charming, the women are beguiling and complicated. The show also received 16 Emmy Nominations last week, so you know I'm not steering you wrong.

Season 2 premieres Sunday, July 27th, on AMC.

You can view a recap of the first season here.

Take a chance on me

Last night, Brian took me to see "Mamma Mia!".

It was a blast!
I love movie musicals.

Obviously they didn't choose Colin Firth or Pierce Brosnan for their singing abilities... they were cringe-worthy, but nice to look at.

I've been listening to ABBA all morning now.

Good times.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. . . Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, to be gorgeous, talented, and fabulous. Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that others won't feel insecure around you. We are born to make manifest the glory of God within us. And as we let our light shine, we consciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

You really, really, like me?!?

I know, I know... the posting has been light the past several days. For the 7 faithful fans I have out there, I apologize. One of these days I'll be able to share with you what I've been working on...

In the meantime, the lovely and fabulous Tiburon of Shark Bait has gifted me with an award!! (I know! I was as stunned as you are!! Looks like I need to let her win my giveaways more often! :)

None of this could be possible without the support of YOU, my faithful readers!! (Sorry my acceptance speech isn't any longer... I. can't. find. any. words. So humbled! And the orchestra started playing over me...)

This award is one of those that you have to pass along... yep, it has strings attached. But having one posted on your blog is like saying you frequent the Peach Pit... like a lot... and you hang out with Kelly and Dylan every day after school.

I have been informed that the rules are as follows:
  1. Please put the logo on your blog. (On the left... see??)
  2. Add a link to the person who awarded you. (Done. See above.)
  3. You must nominate 7 fellow bloggers for this award. (I'm going to spread the love further than that!)
  4. Add links to the recipients. (Well, of course!)
  5. Leave a comment so the recipients know they have received an award. (I'm not going to bother... I know, blasphemy! Nearly all of them have me in their RSS Feed... at least they'd better!
So, without further adieu, I present to you my WINNERS (in alphabetical order) of The Brillante Weblog Premio 2008...
  • Christy of Suburban Hippie - I'm proud to call her one of my BFFs from high school, and through the miracle of the internets we found each other again after all of those years... so happy to see she never lost her stellar sense of humor!
  • Hannah of Sherbet Blossom Studio - this girl is another one I'm not lucky enough to know in real life, but man she's got skillz! Quite the eye for design, too!
  • Kami of It's No Biggie - this girl is having the best year ever and is so incredibly talented! I wish she was my next door neighbor so I wouldn't have to pretend to know her...
  • Kristen of D+K+M - Since I'm giving one to my brother, I must be fair and give one to my sister. J/K. I really enjoy reading her blog, WHEN she posts... which isn't often enough, naturally. It's fun to see her turning into a cute little mom!
  • Kristen of The Birkmeyers - First we were co-workers, then we were roommates. It's so fun to see how her little family is growing! Her blog is a great mix of family updates and cool finds.
  • Melanie of Poage Perspective - I idolized this chica during elementary school... she lived next door, and I wanted to grow up to be just like her. I love seeing pics of her little boy because he looks just like the way I remember his mom! Another miracle of the internets and we found each other again after more than 20 years!
  • Ray of AmbienRay - She's another long-lost Houston friend who's now part of my blogging universe. Love reading her spot-on opinions and so-true pet peeves! Also wish she was my next door neighbor, because then I'd be living in Hawaii.
  • Scott of Bluree - Okay, okay we're related... but I can't tell you how excited I get when I see he's made another post. Sure, I don't always agree with him, but I love to see how his mind works. (And shhh... don't tell him, but he's totally turning into my dad!)
  • And of course, I can't leave out my G-Squared Girls... (some of their blogs are private, sorry) Andi, Emily, & Karen - I don't know what I'd do without you!
So there you have it... I hope y'all are as proud to post your award as I am!!
Thanks, Tib! :)

Someone at CNN and the AP thinks they're punny...

Voters to decide on naming sewage plant for Bush

Story Highlights
  • Measure will be on November ballot in San Francisco
  • Those in favor say it commemorates mess they say Bush has made
  • Local Republicans say they'll work to flush the proposal
SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- A measure seeking to commemorate President Bush's years in office by slapping his name on a San Francisco sewage plant has qualified for the November ballot.

The measure certified Thursday would rename the Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant the George W. Bush Sewage Plant.

Supporters say the idea is to commemorate the mess they claim Bush has left behind by actions such as the war in Iraq.

Local Republicans say the plan stinks and they will oppose it.

Recent Read

I picked up this book at the library on a recommendation of my good friend, Emily... and it did not disappoint! I laughed, I cried... I really couldn't put it down. I have a new appreciation for those early settlers and all they went through so long ago. This book is the first of a trilogy with Sarah's Quilt and The Star Garden. I'm anxious to pick up the other two at the library soon!

These is my Words
by Nancy E. Turner

From Publishers Weekly
Based on the real-life exploits of the author's great-grandmother, this fictionalized diary vividly details one woman's struggles with life and love in frontier Arizona at the end of the last century. When she begins recording her life, Sarah Prine is an intelligent, headstrong 18-year-old capable of holding her own on her family's settlement near Tucson. Her skill with a rifle fends off a constant barrage of Indian attacks and outlaw assaults. It also attracts a handsome Army captain named Jack Elliot. By the time she's 21, Sarah has recorded her loveless marriage to a family friend, the establishment of a profitable ranch, the birth of her first child?and the death of her husband. The love between Jack and Sarah, which dominates the rest of the tale, has begun to blossom. Fragmented and disjointed in its early chapters, with poor spelling and grammar, Sarah's journal gradually gains in clarity and eloquence as she matures. While this device may frustrate some readers at first, Taylor's deft progression produces the intended reward: she not only tells of her heroine's growth, but she shows it through Sarah's writing and insights. The result is a compelling portrait of an enduring love, the rough old West and a memorable pioneer.

Walk with me down memory lane

I've seen this post on so many blogs already, and thought it might be fun to see what my faithful readers and friends come up with!

1. As a comment on my blog, leave one memory that you and I had together. It doesn't matter if you know me a little or a lot, or not even in real life... anything you remember!

2. Next, re-post these instructions on your blog and see how many people leave a memory about you. It's actually pretty funny to see the responses.

3. If you leave a memory about me, I'll assume you're playing the game and I'll come to your blog and leave one about you. If you don't want to play on your blog, or if you don't have a blog, I'll leave my memory of you in my comments or even randomly on one of your posts.

If you show me the love, I will do the same for you!
I can't wait to see what people remember!

Organic schmanic

Here in the Sprik household, we haven't yet subscribed to an organic-only lifestyle... because, who can actually afford it? We've got pesticides and chemicals coursing through our veins for the time being, but maybe that will change once we have children to feed.

I found a great list here of the foods that you should and shouldn't buy organic. It also lists foods in their order of pesticide loads. Check it out...

So disappointed

Stupid DeeeAhhhhhna picked Jesse.

Don't get me wrong, Jesse is a nice enough guy... just a little young and aimless, if you ask me.

I think she dropped the word "Honey" about 39 times in the After the Rose special. I didn't believe it... sounded too fake.

What happened to the girl who said she wanted to have 2 babies before she was 30... so she could be a young mom? Then she made some comment about never having her life planned out... so Jesse would be the one to allow her that freedom? Whatever. I felt bad for Jason... he seemed like such a good guy, too. Here's hoping they make him the next Bachelor. I loved how he brought up Graham and how defensive she got! Priceless. And why did they not portray Jeremy's need to talk to her a week after she dumped him as crayzee?? Did he really think she'd say, "You're right... I want YOU and not Jason anymore??" I don't think the ABC interns would let her get away with that. Did Jeremy never leave the Bahamas? Weird.

Stupid DeeeAhhhhna. I never liked her that much on the season of "The Bachelor" where she was jilted anyway.

A couple of years ago, my old roommate, Kristen, turned me on to these hilarious recaps written by a girl named Lincee in Houston. I really didn't watch the show much before I read the recaps - they make it so much more fun!! You should check them out.

Bottom line, I guess... I do love me some stupid TV.

Must Have Monday

This week's Must Have Monday is an Ice Cream Maker. Nothing says summer like homemade ice cream! I brought ours out over the weekend, and treated Brian to his favorite fruit in ice cream form... yep, it was a hit!
Blueberry Ice Cream

2 cups blueberries
3/4 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
1 1/2 cups heavy cream

1. Get a plastic container out (or churner) to be ready to pour ice cream in. Drop the blueberries, sugar and salt in a sauce pan and turn to medium-high heat. Bring to a boil over moderate heat, mashing berries and stirring with a fork. Simmer mixture, stirring frequently, for about 5 minutes; cool slightly.

2. In a blender, puree mixture with milk just until smooth and stir in cream. Chill this mixture until cold in the fridge or an ice bath. Churn in an ice-cream machine until thick or place in a plastic container, pop it in the freezer and give it a good whip every few hours.

Prairie Dressing

Mindi's post yesterday, reminded me of an article I recently read about the new website created by FLDS women to sell children's clothing.

Personal opinions aside, browsing around on their site made me a little sad. I was also surprised because none of these outfits are cheap - the baby dresses are about $40 and the teen dresses are over $70, and nearly all of them contain polyester... hot.

Check them out for yourself here.

And we all know how hard it is to find modest clothing these days...
